Buy Airbnb gift cards with crypto — currency decides everything

Airbnb credit is one of the more thoughtful travel gifts you can buy with crypto: large denominations, no expiry in most markets, and it applies to a real booking rather than a voucher scheme. The rule that catches people is currency, not country.

Why we point to a licensed venue The welcome-bonus link above goes to CEX.IO, which is a registered Money Services Business with FinCEN in the United States, holds a DLT Provider authorisation (FSC0686FSA) from the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission, and operates a CySEC-authorised investment firm in the EU. Licensing is not a profit guarantee — it means there is a regulator to complain to.

The quick verdict
4.3/ 5

One of the best travel gifts available for crypto. Sold at face value, large denominations available, and it applies to the full Airbnb total including service fees. Match the currency to the recipient's account and buy an amount that actually covers a stay.

The currency rule

Airbnb behaves differently from the console stores, and the difference is genuinely useful. The constraint is the currency, not the destination. Credit in USD is applied to bookings the account pays for in USD — and the account can book a property in Lisbon, Tokyo or Buenos Aires while paying in USD.

What does not work is credit in a currency the account does not transact in. If the recipient's Airbnb account is set to pay in euros, USD credit will sit there unused.

How to get the currency right
Ask the recipientWhich currency their Airbnb prices display in. That is the currency to buy.
Or infer itThe currency their bank card is denominated in is usually the account currency.
Do not infer fromWhere the trip is going, or where they live if they bank elsewhere.
If unsureBuy a small denomination first and let them confirm it appears as credit.

Availability varies by currency and is narrower than for retail brands. BitPay has historically carried travel brands with occasional discounts, which on a large denomination can be worth more than any rebate — a 5% discount on a $400 card is $20. Check it before defaulting to the usual pick.

What the credit covers, and what it does not

Covered

  • Nightly accommodation rate
  • Cleaning fees
  • Airbnb service fees
  • Taxes charged through the platform
  • Airbnb Experiences, where available
  • Part-payment, with the balance on a card

Not covered

  • Anything paid directly to a host off-platform
  • A card hold for a security deposit, where required
  • Bookings in a currency the credit is not in
  • Transfer to another Airbnb account
  • Conversion back to cash or crypto
  • Refund to the original buyer
Never pay a host outside Airbnb A request to move payment off the platform — bank transfer, crypto, a "cheaper direct rate" — removes every protection the booking had, and it is a well-worn scam on any accommodation platform. Gift card credit is one good reason to keep the whole transaction on-platform where it belongs.

Redeeming an Airbnb code

  1. Type the Airbnb gift card page yourself Sign in to the account that will make the booking.
  2. Enter the code and PIN Airbnb cards use a code plus a separate PIN — both are in the order email.
  3. Confirm the credit and currency It should appear immediately in the account's payment section.
  4. Select credit at checkout On some bookings you need to tick the credit explicitly rather than relying on it applying automatically.
From our research desk

Airbnb is my standard answer when someone wants to give a substantial gift and crypto itself is the wrong choice — a wedding present, a milestone birthday, a thank-you that needs to feel like something. The recipient chooses the destination and the dates, which is most of the pleasure, and the credit covers the service fee, which is the part people resent paying.

Buy a real amount. I have seen a $50 Airbnb card land poorly precisely because it was framed as "towards a trip" — it read as a gesture rather than a gift. The same $50 as a food-delivery or retail card would have been used and appreciated the same week.

Frequently asked questions

Does Airbnb accept cryptocurrency?
No. Airbnb does not take crypto at checkout. Buying an Airbnb gift card from a crypto marketplace and redeeming it as account credit is the working route, and it means the eventual booking is paid from credit rather than a card.
Does an Airbnb gift card work in any country?
The card is denominated in a currency, and Airbnb applies gift card credit to bookings in the matching currency. The account must be able to transact in that currency. You can generally book a stay anywhere in the world with, say, USD credit — the constraint is the currency the account pays in, not the location of the property.
Can Airbnb credit cover the whole booking including fees?
Credit is applied to the total charged by Airbnb, which includes the nightly rate, cleaning fee and service fee. It does not cover things paid directly to a host outside the platform, and it will not cover a security deposit hold where the host requires one on a card. If the credit does not cover the full total, the remainder goes to the payment method on file.
Does Airbnb credit expire?
In most markets, gift card credit added to an Airbnb account does not expire, though the terms are set per jurisdiction and by local law. Credit is non-refundable, non-transferable between accounts and cannot be converted back to cash or crypto once applied.
Is an Airbnb card a good gift?
For anyone who travels, yes — it is one of the few large-denomination gift cards where the recipient genuinely chooses how to use it, and it does not feel like store credit. Buy a meaningful amount rather than a token one: a $50 card covers a fraction of a stay and reads as an afterthought, whereas $200–$400 covers a weekend.
