The currency rule
Airbnb behaves differently from the console stores, and the difference is genuinely useful. The constraint is the currency, not the destination. Credit in USD is applied to bookings the account pays for in USD — and the account can book a property in Lisbon, Tokyo or Buenos Aires while paying in USD.
What does not work is credit in a currency the account does not transact in. If the recipient's Airbnb account is set to pay in euros, USD credit will sit there unused.

Availability varies by currency and is narrower than for retail brands. BitPay has historically carried travel brands with occasional discounts, which on a large denomination can be worth more than any rebate — a 5% discount on a $400 card is $20. Check it before defaulting to the usual pick.

Redeeming an Airbnb code

Airbnb is my standard answer when someone wants to give a substantial gift and crypto itself is the wrong choice — a wedding present, a milestone birthday, a thank-you that needs to feel like something. The recipient chooses the destination and the dates, which is most of the pleasure, and the credit covers the service fee, which is the part people resent paying.
Buy a real amount. I have seen a $50 Airbnb card land poorly precisely because it was framed as "towards a trip" — it read as a gesture rather than a gift. The same $50 as a food-delivery or retail card would have been used and appreciated the same week.
