Genuinely useful, and the one category where the platform choice can save real money. Look for a brand discount before defaulting to the best rebate — on a $500 card a 5% discount is worth more than any cashback scheme in this niche.
- Typical cost
- Face value; discounts up to 20% on some brands
- ID required
- No on Bitrefill / Coinsbee
- Lock type
- Currency of the card
- Not covered
- Deposit holds, locally collected fees
Why denomination size changes the decision
Everywhere else on this site we tell you the markup is small and the network fee dominates. Travel inverts that, because the amounts are an order of magnitude larger.
| Card value | 3% markup costs | 1% rebate saves | 5% brand discount saves | Worth comparing? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $40 | $1.20 | $0.40 | $2.00 | Marginal |
| $150 | $4.50 | $1.50 | $7.50 | Yes |
| $500 | $15.00 | $5.00 | $25.00 | Definitely |
| $1,000 | $30.00 | $10.00 | $50.00 | Definitely |

The practical consequence: for travel, check whether any platform is running a discount on the brand before you check who pays the best rebate. A live brand discount is a much bigger number, and BitPay in particular has historically rotated discounts across travel brands.
Travel brands commonly stocked
| Category | Brands seen most often | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | Airbnb, Hotels.com, hotel-voucher brands, Hilton and resort-specific cards | Currency of account decides |
| Flights | American Airlines, Delta, Southwest, airline-voucher brands, flight-gift products | Often name-locked at booking |
| Rail and coach | Amtrak, Eurostar, National Express | Country-specific |
| Cruises | Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, Holland America | Applied to a booking, not onboard cash |
| Car hire | Car-hire voucher brands | Excess and deposit still need a card |
| Experiences | Virgin Experience Days, Red Letter Days, spa and wellness vouchers | Usually single-country |
| Booking aggregators | lastminute.com, travel-voucher brands | Read what the voucher applies to |
| Ground transport | Uber, Lyft | Credit is currency-denominated |

What travel credit does not cover
- Security deposit holds. Hotels and car-hire firms place an authorisation on a card. Gift card credit cannot satisfy a hold, so you still need a card at the counter.
- Locally collected charges. Resort fees, city taxes and tourist levies are frequently collected on arrival rather than through the booking platform.
- Name changes and rebooking fees. Airline change fees are usually charged separately and may not accept credit.
- Off-platform payments. A host or property asking for a direct transfer is a scam pattern — never pay outside the platform.
- Currency mismatch. Credit in a currency the account does not transact in simply sits unused.
Where to buy travel credit with crypto
| Platform | Catalogue | Price vs face value | Identity checks | Cashback | Coverage | Our review |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitrefill | 5,000+ brands / 190+ countries | Face value on most cards; up to ~2% on Amazon and prepaid debit | Not required for standard gift-card purchases | 1%–10% sats-back, credited instantly to your Bitrefill balance | Global, strongest in US / EU / UK | Review |
| BitPay | 100+ major US brands in the app | Face value; frequent brand discounts of 1%–20% | Account required; identity checks scale with volume | Rotating brand discounts instead of flat cashback | Primarily USA | Review |
| Coinsbee | 5,000+ brands / 185 countries | Typically 0%–5% depending on brand and region | Email only for most orders; verification on larger volumes | No standing cashback programme | 185 countries — the widest coverage in the category | Review |
| CoinGate | Curated gift-card shop plus a large merchant network | Mostly face value; spread built into the crypto rate | Light-touch for gift cards; full KYC on the exchange side | No fixed cashback | EU-centred, global reach | Review |

Travel is the category where I have seen the biggest single saving in this whole niche: a rotating discount on a hotel brand that came to roughly 8% on a several-hundred-dollar booking. That is more than a year of sats-back on everyday purchases, earned in one transaction by checking two sites instead of one.
It is also the category where I most often advise buying the card rather than gifting crypto. A couple planning a trip wants a booking, not an asset that might be worth 30% less by the time they book. Travel credit removes the volatility from the part of the gift that has a deadline attached.
