How the shared balance works
Uber credit is held on the account, not on the app. Redeem a card and the balance appears in whichever Uber product you open, as long as it is the same signed-in account. At checkout the credit is applied first and any remainder goes to the payment method on file — which is what makes this such a clean crypto purchase: you can fund transport and takeaway for weeks without a card being charged.

A handful of markets separate the two products. If the marketplace listing says "Uber Eats" specifically rather than "Uber", assume it is Eats-only in that country and read the description.

Face value is the norm. BitPay deserves a mention here because its rotating brand discounts have historically included delivery and transport brands — when a discount is live it can beat face value outright, which is rare in this category. The trade-off is an account and identity verification, so no privacy benefit.
The two quirks
Tips and some surcharges may not draw on credit
This is market-dependent and has changed more than once. In several countries a driver tip is charged to a payment method rather than taken from gift card credit, and the same can apply to certain regulatory surcharges. The consequence is small but annoying: a ride can complete with credit remaining and still charge a card for the tip.
Fix: leave a payment method on the account. You are not trying to avoid having a card on file for privacy here — the account already knows who you are — you are trying to avoid paying with fiat, and credit will still cover the overwhelming majority of the cost.
Currency has to match, and the balance does not convert
Uber credit is denominated. Credit in one currency cannot be spent in another market, so a card bought for a friend's home country is useless to them on holiday. If the gift is intended for travel, buy for the country they will be travelling to — or buy an Airbnb or hotel card instead.
Redeeming an Uber code

This is the card I actually buy most often with crypto, and the reason is mundane: it converts a volatile asset into a month of transport and food at a fixed number. No card charge, no currency conversion fee from a bank, no monthly statement line to reconcile. Face value plus a 1% rebate makes it very slightly cheaper than paying by card.
The tip quirk caught me out early. I assumed a full balance meant no card charges, then found small tip charges appearing anyway. Leaving a payment method on the account solved it entirely and cost nothing.
