Buy Apple gift cards with crypto — one card, one country, many uses

Apple consolidated its App Store and iTunes cards into a single Apple Gift Card, which now covers apps, subscriptions, iCloud and — in some markets — hardware. It is genuinely versatile, tightly country-locked, and the single most requested card by scammers, which is worth knowing before anyone asks you to buy one.

Licensing is not a profit guarantee — it means there is a regulator to complain to.

The quick verdict
4.2/ 5

Versatile and easy to buy at face value. The Apple Gift Card covers apps, subscriptions, iCloud and hardware in supported markets, which makes it one of the more genuinely useful cards to buy with crypto — provided the storefront country matches the Apple ID.

One card, not three

If you remember buying separate "App Store & iTunes" and "Apple Store" cards, that distinction is largely gone. Apple merged them into a single Apple Gift Card in 2020 across most markets. The balance sits on the Apple Account and is spent on whatever Apple sells in that country.

Crypto marketplaces have not entirely caught up with the naming. You will still see listings called "iTunes Gift Card", "App Store & iTunes" and "Apple Gift Card" side by side, sometimes at different prices for the same underlying product. Read the description, and prefer the listing that names the storefront country explicitly.

Where to buy Apple credit with crypto

Face value is normal on major regions, so the tie-breakers are the network fee and the rebate — which again points at Bitrefill over Lightning. Coinsbee is the better option for smaller storefronts.

The Apple ID country rule

An Apple Account has a country or region that determines the storefront, the currency and which gift cards it accepts. The important detail for gift buyers is the change mechanic: Apple requires the account balance to be spent to zero before the country can be changed.

That creates a trap. If you redeem a mismatched card and it somehow lands, or if you have leftover credit in an old storefront, you cannot switch countries until the balance is gone — and you cannot spend it because the storefront you want is the other one. Match the country from the start.

  • Check on device: Settings → your name → Media & Purchases → View Account, then Country/Region
  • Or open the App Store and look at the currency on any paid app
  • Buy the listing that names that exact country and currency
  • For a gift to someone abroad, buy the smallest denomination first and confirm it redeems

The warning that matters more than the fees

Nobody legitimate is paid in Apple gift cards Not a tax authority. Not a utility company. Not the police. Not a court. Not Apple support. Not a debt collector. Not a hospital. Not a family member who has suddenly texted from a new number. If a person or a recorded voice on the phone asks you to buy Apple gift cards and read out the codes, the request is fraudulent, every single time, with no exceptions. Hang up and, if the caller claimed to be a government body, report it through that body's official published channel — not a number the caller gave you.

We include this on a page about buying cards with crypto for a specific reason: crypto buyers are a disproportionate target for the "buy cards and send the codes" script, because they are already comfortable with irreversible payments. The same instinct that makes an on-chain transfer feel routine makes reading out a gift-card code feel routine, and the two are equally unrecoverable.

Our scam guide covers the full set of patterns, including the "recovery service" that contacts victims afterwards and takes a second payment.

Redeeming an Apple gift card code

  1. On iPhone or iPad App Store → profile icon → Redeem Gift Card or Code. Camera entry works, but pasting is more reliable for a digital code.
  2. On Mac App Store → your name → Redeem Gift Card.
  3. Confirm the balance The Apple Account balance should update immediately and show in the storefront currency.
  4. Set it to cover subscriptions Balance is normally used before a card on file, so existing subscriptions will start drawing on it at the next renewal.
From our research desk

The most practical use I have found for an Apple card bought with crypto is prepaying a year of iCloud+ and Apple One. It converts a recurring card charge into a one-off crypto purchase, and the balance is consumed automatically at each renewal with no further action.

That said, this is the one brand where I think the scam warning genuinely outranks the buying advice. In terms of money lost, the impostor-payment script does far more damage in this category than every markup and network fee on this website combined.

Frequently asked questions

Is there still a difference between an iTunes card and an Apple Gift Card?
Not in most markets. Apple consolidated the App Store & iTunes card and the Apple Store card into a single Apple Gift Card in 2020, usable across apps, subscriptions, iCloud storage and — in supported countries — Apple hardware and accessories. Marketplaces still list older names, so read the product description rather than the title.
Are Apple gift cards country-locked?
Yes. The card is issued in one currency for one storefront and redeems only on an Apple ID registered to that country. A US card will not redeem on a UK or German Apple ID. Changing an Apple ID country requires spending any existing balance to zero first, which means a mismatched card cannot be rescued by switching.
Can Apple credit pay for iCloud and subscriptions?
Yes. Apple Account balance is generally applied to iCloud+ storage, Apple Music, Apple TV+ and App Store subscriptions before any card on file is charged. This makes it a clean way to prepay a year of Apple services in crypto with no card attached to the account.
Why do scammers always ask for Apple gift cards?
Because the codes are liquid, irreversible and easy to transmit by phone or message. Fake calls claiming to be from a tax authority, a utility, a police force or Apple support routinely demand payment in Apple cards. No government agency or legitimate company accepts gift cards as payment, anywhere. If someone asks, it is a scam without exception.
Can I sell an Apple gift card for crypto?
Only at a heavy discount on peer-to-peer markets, and it is one of the highest-fraud trades in the category precisely because of the point above. Expect to lose a large share of face value and to be treated as a fraud risk by the counterparty. See selling gift cards for crypto.
