The two rules that decide everything
Rule one: Spotify must be the biller
Identical to Netflix. If the subscription was started inside an app or bundled with a phone contract, the app store or the operator holds the payment relationship. Spotify cannot apply a prepaid code to a subscription it does not bill. Open account settings and look at the payment section — if it names a third party, that is your answer.
Rule two: the plan has to be the right one

Stacking and duration
